FAQ

Have questions about Reasons to Believe? Explore common questions and their answers on our beliefs, science and faith, giving, and how to connect with our team.

  • What is Reasons to Believe?

Reasons to Believe (RTB) is a Christian nonprofit apologetics ministry that explores the harmony between science and biblical faith. Founded by astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross in 1986, our team of staff scholars—along with our global scholar community—represents a wide range of PhDs across the STEMM fields: science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine. Through their work, we explain how scientific discoveries point to the God of the Bible, affirm its truth, and provide evidence for our ultimate hope in Jesus Christ.

  • Is this “Christian Science”?

No. “Christian Science” refers to a specific heretical religious movement. Reasons to Believe is an evangelical Christian ministry made up of scientists who follow Jesus and affirm the Bible. We explore how scientific discovery and faith work together—but we are not part of that movement.

  • Who are your resources meant for?

Our resources are for anyone curious about the relationship between science and faith. Whether you’re a scholar, pastor, educator, or everyday learner, you’ll find content designed to meet you where you are. Our library now offers both in-depth academic materials for those who want to dive into the details and a growing collection of easy-to-read resources for those who are just getting started. Whatever your background, our goal is to equip you with reasons to believe.

  • I have a specific question for one of your scholars. How can I contact them?

Our scholars love questions! However, due to speaking, writing, and other demands on their time, they’re not able to respond to each person individually. Before reaching out, we’d encourage you to search our content library of articles and resources, or browse our videos and podcasts—chances are one of our scholars has already addressed your question. If you still can’t find what you’re looking for, our Ministry Care team is happy to help. Email us at [email protected] and we’ll do our best to get you a helpful response.

  • Can I invite one of your scholars to speak at an event or appear on a podcast?

Yes! Our scholars regularly speak at conferences, churches, and universities, and also participate in podcasts and other media opportunities. To learn more or submit a request, please visit our Book a Scholar page.

  • How do I become a Christian?

Becoming a Christian begins with recognizing your need for God and placing your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that he died for your sins and rose from the dead. It’s a personal decision that starts a lifelong relationship with God. If you’d like to explore this further, we’ve put together a more in-depth resource to guide you through this life-changing decision. Read more

  • Where can I read your core beliefs as a ministry?

You can find them in our Statement of Faith, which outlines what we believe about God, Jesus, Scripture, creation, and salvation.

  • Does RTB believe in evolution?

Not in the way “evolution” is typically used. While RTB accepts that some limited change (microevolution) occurs within species over time, we reject the idea that all life—including humans—arose from evolution (macroevolution). We believe God directly intervened in history to create new forms of life, with humanity as a special creation in his image.

  • Does RTB believe the days in Genesis 1 were literal 24-hour days?

We believe this passage of Scripture is literal, not figurative, but a literal reading doesn’t require the days to be 24 hours. In Hebrew, the word for “day” is yom, which is used for different lengths of time depending on the context: the daylight hours, a 24-hour day, or a longer age or season. RTB understands the creation “days” in Genesis as long periods of time—a view that fits both the biblical language and the scientific evidence showing that God’s creative work unfolded over vast eras.

  • Does RTB believe the earth is billions of years old?

Yes. Scripture says that God has called creation as a witness of himself (Psalm 19; Romans 1). We’re confident that God called a reliable witness and that the Bible and nature both point to an ancient earth and universe—billions of years old. We see no conflict between the Bible’s message and the age of the universe.

  • What does RTB believe about Adam and Eve—were they real people?

Yes, we believe Adam and Eve were real, historical people specially created by God. They were the first humans, uniquely made in God’s image, and the ancestors of all people today. While we accept scientific evidence for long ages, humanity’s beginning was a miraculous creation event, not the result of evolution from animals.

  • Was Noah’s flood a global flood that covered the entire earth?

RTB holds that Noah’s flood was universal in its scope for humanity but not necessarily global in geographic extent. Here’s why: at the time of the flood, humanity had not yet spread across the entire globe. Scripture describes the flood as covering “all the earth” and destroying “all flesh”—language that refers to the extent of human civilization at that time, not necessarily every square mile of the planet’s surface. This interpretation is consistent with both a straightforward reading of the biblical text and the physical evidence in the geological record. The flood was a real, catastrophic, world-altering event that accomplished exactly what God said it would—the judgment of humanity—without requiring a geology-defying flood that covered Mount Everest.

  • What does RTB believe about aliens, UFOs, UAPs, and extraterrestrial life?

RTB does not see evidence that intelligent extraterrestrial life exists. But the Bible does describe other beings—angels and demons—who belong to the spiritual realm and can defy the laws of physics as we know them. Most UFO and UAP reports can be explained as natural phenomena, human technology, or misidentifications. The rare unexplained cases are more plausibly tied to spiritual realities than to aliens.

  • Does RTB believe the earth is flat?

No, the earth is spherical. This has been established by centuries of scientific observation, satellite imagery, physics, and astronomy.
